Narratives of Singleness Fluid Female Identities in Postmodern Times
Andreea Catrinela LAZAR
Limbi si civilizatii straine - engleza
Editura Institutul European

ANDREEA CATRINELA LAZAR undertook a thorough-going study of the early works of Doris Lessing and Margaret Atwood placing them in their immediate British and Canadian cultural context, but also in the postmodernist literary and theoretical context of the latter half of the 20th century, wherein feminism occupied an important place. The feminist critical perspective has not lost its validity in the last couple of decades, but the original aspect of the study lies in its approach to feminine identity starting from the picture of postmodern society depicted in the works of Polish sociologist Zygmund Bauman (Liquid Modernity, Liquid Love) and of French sociologist Francois de Singly (Les uns avec les autres): a "liquid", unstable society, with no permanent but only ephemeral values, where consumerism prevails as a philosophy.
The author maintains that the two writers were ahead of their time and even anticipated postmodernist themes and narrative strategies. She also claims that their common topics justify the common critical approach: an interdisciplinary approach that combines feminist ideology and theory with narratology and a social-psychoanalytical perspective in order to achieve a refined analysis of the female characters' fluid identity and psychic metamorphoses in their efforts to free themselves from coercive behavioural patterns.
The author's interdisciplinary study combines feminist ideology and theory with narratology and a social-psychoanalytical perspective in order to achieve a refined analysis of the female characters' fluid identities and psychic metamorphoses in their efforts to free themselves from coercive behavioural patterns.
The author's comparative study sets out to identify and explore the similarities between the two writers, much less the differences. The study follows clearly conceived logical stages in its critical demonstration, which are outlined in the Introduction, where the author foregrounds the relevance of her chosen topic in the context of national research.
